A co-operative, open source project
This is a co-operative project to develop resources to teach Interpersonal Skills in Higher Education. It is a digital book, ready for dissemination amongst potential users and contributors. The intention is that teachers in any professional group will:
- use the materials in the book and amend them in the light of testing;
- add their own existing resources to the collection;
- be inspired to develop their teaching and associated resources;
- develop the whole resource as an open source resource for all teachers in H.E. or specialist professional training environments.
The structure of the book today
The page on the chapters and headings of the book is an indication of the current state of play. Sections marked # are not yet created. The whole is subject to change and development as co-writers get working.
Samples taken from the book in development
Samples taken from a draft of the text are presented as tasters:
- a brief overview of the structure of training recommended, which is expanded in detail in the book;
- a caution about difficulties which can arise without proper preparation and training;
- guidance on the structure and practice of training the teacher to offer Interpersonal Skills Training. This follows the same overall structure recommended for students and forms an important modelling experience;
- serious caveats about using video to provide accurate feedback to students about their interpersonal skills, how improper use can undermine students' self-directed competence and willingness to learn and guidance on using video well;
- the central place of rehearsal and role-taking in practical skill learning activities in the classroom, how to improve their effectiveness, efficiency and adoption;
- a sample of practical training activities for the classroom which might be used early in training or intermittently throughout training - back to basics.
